Operators can reduce cooling water use through water-aware site selection, dry or hybrid heat rejection, higher-temperature liquid cooling, recycled or non-potable water, and controls that adjust cooling to weather and computing demand.
The best programs measure direct and indirect water consumption, set watershed-specific targets, and avoid shifting impacts from water to excessive energy use. Heat reuse and workload scheduling can provide further reductions where infrastructure and operating requirements permit them.
